About This Position

Job Title: 1 Year Contract Limited Term Appointment, Assistant Professor in Community Economic and Social Development

Position Status: Temporary; OPSEU Local 685

Location: Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

Preferred Start Date: July 1, 2026, or as negotiated

Qualifications 

  • Preference will be given to candidates with a terminal degree in Community Development, or a cognate discipline (including but not limited to Adult Education, Political Science, Economics, Planning or Geography, Sociology, Social Work, Indigenous Studies, Environmental Studies, or Business Administration) and a demonstrated commitment to teaching and research.
  • Expertise in teaching core Community Development, Community Engagement, Indigenous Social/Economic Policy, and/or Participatory/Community-Based Research Methods
  • Experience working (professional or research) in Indigenous community contexts and in Northern Ontario.
  • Demonstrated relevant academic background and research portfolio 
  • Demonstrated commitment to decolonizing approaches to teaching, working with diverse student demographics and a record of teaching excellence. 
  • Experience with remote/online/hybrid instruction is desirable, but the applicant must be available to teach on-campus classes.

Expectations

  • Teach a selection of courses from: CESD 2016: Community Based Research Methods; CESD 2096: Entrepreneurship for Community Development; CESD 2106: Community Economic Development and the Social Economy; CESD 2607: Community Engagement and Strategic Planning; CESD 3016: Global/Local Relations: Critical Perspectives; CESD 4016: Placement & Major Project I; CESD 4017: Placement & Major Projects II.
  • Supervision and advising of undergraduate students
  • Participate in service to the university, such as student mentorship, research advising, and academic committees.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as outlined in the OPSEU Local 685 Full-time faculty collective agreement.
