Reporting to, and with oversight of, the Vice-President Academic, the Director will provide leadership in developing and delivering on Canadore’s research priorities as well as establishing and supporting practices that nurture a positive research culture across the College.  The Director is responsible for developing research plans in alignment with Canadore’s key strategic and academic goals, while diligently managing the administrative, financial, and human resource needs of its Research Centre.

The incumbent will work closely with academic Faculties to plan, coordinate, and promote research activities, as well as to identify and respond to opportunities for new research programs, projects, and initiatives that enhance the College’s reputation and identity. They will foster a research culture that delivers significant value to students, faculty, staff and community partners. They will be familiar with academic and administrative policies and support cross-departmental relationships by demonstrating effective communication skills.

The Director is responsible for the day-to-day performance of the Centre ensuring that applied research funding and projects are managed efficiently and effectively and conducted in compliance with the College’s policies and external funders’ standards. With accountability for planning, development, delivery, evaluation, and financial management/viability of the Centre’s activities, the incumbent ensures effective use of current research practices. The Director will hire, directly supervise, and conduct performance reviews for all direct reports; as well as manage the various indirect reports associated with the Research Centre.  The Director is responsible for the establishment and management of all departmental and research project budgets, coordinates with academic leads regarding faculty involvement in research activities and ensures reporting to funders is accurate and timely.

Through proactive planning, the Director will organize and prioritize tasks to foster excellence within the overall college-program mix as well as ensure a positive reputation that is consistent with the mission and vision and commitment to its 5 Pillars; Student Success, Program and Service Excellence, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Connection to Community and Sustainability.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Successful completion of a PhD in a relevant field required
  • Minimum seven (7) years of recent research experience required including the identification of opportunities and establishing priorities to implement strategic plans
  • Project management training or certification (PMP designation) considered an asset
  • Accounting or budget management training considered an asset
  • Keen knowledge of the college applied research funding landscape, various funders and their programs
  • Knowledge of the college educational structure and experience in the college environment
  • Superior computer skills in Microsoft Office 365 suite and PeopleSoft
  • Excellent communication, management, human relations and conflict resolution skills
  • Excellent skills in organization, information handling, and time management
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task, delegate and coordinate in an environment with strict deadlines/timelines
  • Experience and success managing a diverse staff in high-performance settings
  • Experience, knowledge and skills specifically related to the effective and efficient management of research administration
  • Experience developing and leading projects as a project manager
  • Experience developing and managing complex and numerous budgets
  • Superior interpersonal and language skills to develop manage and maintain a wide range of stakeholder links/ relationships; facilitate suitable partnerships, diplomatically while working in collaboration with relevant internal and external stakeholders
  • Superior leadership abilities reinforced by intellectual agility, objectivity, emotional intelligence and self-awareness
  • Ability to cope with a demanding workload, remain calm and focused under pressure with an ability to manage and deal with a wide range of individuals with diverse backgrounds and needs
  • Exceptional communication, listening, interpersonal and presentation skills with a demonstrated ability to consult widely and fairly in the identification of problems or opportunities and effective solutions
  • Previous experience with supervision of various staff within a unionized setting
  • Knowledge of, and sensitivity to, gender, race, sexual orientation, age and multicultural issues
  • Willing to travel between sites for the Centre, College, and satellite sites
  • In-person, on-campus position. Must be able to reliably commute and/or relocate to North Bay, ON, required 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Research Centre Leadership

  • Work collaboratively with the Vice President Academic in the development of goals and objectives in accordance with the College’s Strategic Mandate Agreement, strategic plan, academic priorities, and operational planning processes
  • Foster an environment that promotes innovation through value-added and community centered research
  • Establishes effective, positive, ongoing relationships with representatives of industry, professional associations, and business contacts in the community, and maintains effective Advisory Committees as required
  • Participate on provincial/national committees as required
  • Develop and implement Canadore College’s Research Centre Strategy and operational business plans
  • Ensure that associated targets and goals for Centre activities are met or exceeded
  • Develop and improve tools and processes to help monitor the Centre’s activities and services
  • Liaise with peers and staff, internally and externally, to advance Canadore’s research agenda
  • In collaboration with the concerned College’s departments, prepare and deliver outreach strategies for promoting the Centre to industry, community organizations, and other educational institutions

Research Centre Administrative Operations

  • Direct activities and performance of the Research Centre
  • Administer all research grants and other external funding, reporting as appropriate to the College’s administration, funders, and external partners
  • Plan the Centre’s human resourcing and budgeting, for administrative and project staff, from various government funding envelopes
  • Direct the Centre’s operational planning along with the corresponding resourcing and budgeting
  • Develop and implement effective administrative procedures and meet regularly with Centre team member(s) to provide direction and ensure the efficient and effective delivery of administrative services both internally and externally
  • Direct the tracking and preparation of reports on metrics for the Research Centre, and present promptly to the Vice-President
  • Direct the development, management and monitoring of the Centre and project/program budgets, staffing, and payroll, as well as office expenses
  • Develop and improve tools for tracking project metrics and the Centre’s performance measures. Liaise with the concerned College departments on the development and implementation of applied research projects
  • In conformity with established practices, lead the development and review of the College’s policies, and procedures related to research.
  • Ensure the College is compliant with all required practices related to intellectual property, legal, and ethical research activities
  • Manage the activities and compliance issues surrounding the Research Ethics Board
  • Other duties as assigned
